We Interrupt this Historical Series for these words.

Google reader has changed my life. Never miss another blog post with Google Reader! Use it today! And subscribe to all your favourite blogs, for instance redbeardonredsox.blogspot.com! It's way easy and fun to use!

Ok, now with that shamelessness out of the way... I got an idea from the geniuses at Surviving Grady. Ok, actually it's the same idea, with different results. It's the Random iPod game!

Take your iPod/MP3 Player/computer music library and put it on random. List the next 5 / 10 / 20 how many ever tracks you want, I like seeing what kind of music people listen to.

Here are my random 10 to get us started:

1. The Shins - Pam Berry. Short 1 minute interlude track from an otherwise brilliant band.

2. Death Cab for Cutie - Brothers on a Hotel Bed. Fantastic track from their breakthrough album Plans.

3. Big Audio Dynamite - The Bottom Line. The first reincarnation of the Clash with their classic 80s post-punk anthem.

4. Santogold - Shove It (feat. Spank Rock). I love this newcomer, I never get sick of this album.

5. The Ramones - Beat on the Brat. Classic punk tune.

6. Foo Fighters - Monkey Wrench. Foos rock, they have never ceased to amaze me since Dave Grohl and the boys burst on the scene shortly after Kurt Cobain and Nirvana passed away.

7. Los Campesinos! - Sweet Dreams, Sweet Cheeks. Great new twee indie pop band out of Cardiff, give them a listen.

8. Death Cab for Cutie - Death of an Interior Decorator. I swear, they don't always sing about death! Still one of the most fantastic bands of the past few years.

9. Editors - Escape the Nest. Just brilliant.

10. Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Happy. Sort of a one-hit wonder from the 90s, I really had higher hopes for this band after buying their cassette as a teenager after seeing them on MTVs 120 Minutes.

Ok, have at it!

*Ted, I know you're musically challenged so you may obstain.

Redbeard76 said...

Any chance you can tell me the singers of these tracks? I can identify only like 3 of these tracks. But still, a fairly good cross section. Chances are, most randoms aren't going to be stellar, most of the time they're exactly that - random. I sort of got lucky with my random picks, but not that much.

And if anyone is wondering, no I didn't alter or skip the randoms to make myself look better, music snob that I am sometimes.

Oh is that Dear God by XTC?? I LOVE that song! One of my anti-religion anthems, for sure.

Yup yup yup.

From my younger years.

I had 2 cards for my MP3 player, on down songs one happy. I lost the happy one. I need to get another one for happy songs.

Redbeard76 said...

I know PIL, good stuff. Is Everybody Happy is a great tune to get the adrenaline going.

I also have 'don't ask me' and 'this is not a love song' on the chip.

Music snob, huh? Now I really don't want to share mine (not that I could, since I am at work & my ipod is not) because let's just say I have an eclectic music collection. ;-)

OMG you just discovered Google Reader?? I have been trying to sell people on that *forever* now. I love my Reader! Even cooler is if you use Gmail and have a Gmail Chat buddy list, you can mark posts "shared" and everyone on your buddly list that also uses Reader can see them too!

Redbeard76 said...

Dawn, the music snob remark was a joke! Relax! You're more than welcome to post your random listenings judgment-free! And I've been doing Google Reader on your advice for a few months now and I love it obviously.

Oh, that's so cute that Sierra said that, Jess! :-)

Dear Redbeard,

I do not have an iPod. Now I wish I did have an iPod. Please do not shun me.

Sincerely,
Sparkle

Redbeard76 said...

Sparkle! You don't necessarily need an ipod or any apple product! Screw Steve Jobs!

All you need is your digital media library, or not even that. Just name out some random songs from the CDs, mini-discs, DDCs, cassettes, vinyl 33/45/78 records, 8 tracks or Edison cylinders you may have in your possession!

Thanks for playing Jess and Jayne! 80s music - represent!

(I love the 80s, vastly underrepresented on my mp3 player, and unjustly so as I have a bunch on the computer.)

Claire, sounds like we have very similar tastes in music, I love MGMT!

I'm kicking myself because I missed a Jose Gonzalez gig last night up here, and only $15 (7 pounds 50 to you!). Grrr, and I can't see Feist on 6/7 because I'll be away camping. But I'm really going to try to make it to Gogol Bordello on 5/8 or the Montreal Music Festival in September.

High Five!

You should check out last.fm

I cant use Pandora in the UK, so its an excellent way to listen to other peoples faves.

The Billy Joel Longest Day, should have been Longest Night. Durrr.

I think I've been away with the fairies.

Redbeard76 said...

Claire, I'll have to check out last.fm or Pandora, thanks!

Normally I get my new music fix from BBC 6 Music and Sirius satellite radio channel 26 - Left of Center (Indie & Imports).

Oh & I knew you were just kidding. I was kidding back. ;-) Mostly because I couldn't play along at the time. LOL!

Glad you like Google Reader! =)

Redbeard76 said...

Thanks for playing, Dawn! Not as many country tunes as I thought you were going to have.

~**Dawn**~ said...

Yeah, I was a little surprised only one came up, but like I said, I listen to a pretty wide variety of music. I don't think even this truly captured it. I just usually end up posting heavy on the country lyrics on my blog because they seem to be the ones that really catch my ear.

Redbeard76 said...

That's the thing, it's not going to really fully capture the spectrum of anyone's eclectic tastes. It's just to give a glimpse into 30-45 minutes of someone's playlist. I've done this a few times and I never really can convey the broadness - sometimes a little from A and some from B, but not C. I guess that's the fun in it, even to surprise the reader.

Gogol.

A band I have to see. My list didn't have any of them, but the chip does.

Have you seen the documentary on Eugene yet? I watched it last week. Pied Piper of Hutzilvania, I think it was called. Last word could be spelt wrong or be off a little. A woman who has a crush on him films him going back to Russia and the Gypsy camps. He never wanted it released I had heard.

It was very interesting. Especially when the old gypsy purist in music didn't like the music CD.

You ever notice that they are one of the best band, critics love, and most people in America don't know them.
